The Millennial Generation was born between 1977 and 1998 and is just beginning to enter the workforce. Members of this 75 million person group are being raised at the most child-centric time in our history and the impact to marketers is undeniable.

In general, it is said that this group displays a great deal of confidence. This could be the result of focus they receive from parents and high expectations placed upon them – not to mention their new found independence with the advent of cell phones, the Internet, and other electronic forms of communication. This is truly the first generation to grow up completely online and as a result, the marketing mix used to target them needs to evolve. As you might expect, this group is technically literate like none other.

Socially, Millennials are different as well. They are typically team-oriented, banding together to date and socialize rather than pairing off. They work well in groups, preferring this to individual endeavors. They are also good at multi-tasking and were the ones studying while listening to the radio or watching television – all the more reason to ensure that you utilize cross-media marketing and ensure consistency among your communications.

From an academic perspective, they are the group that was able to play a sport, attend school, and engage in social endeavors. Millennials believe in going green and supporting endeavors that are good for the environment.

When it comes to work, Millennials seem to expect structure. They acknowledge and respect positions and titles, and want a relationship with their boss. Millennials are in need of mentoring and they’ll respond well to the personal attention. When considering the management of Millennials, be mindful that they appreciate structure and stability. Mentoring Millennials should be more formal, with set meetings and a more authoritative attitude on the mentor’s part.

How to Market

Now that you understand a little more about the target you are seeking to attract, consider the places they go for information and the way they behave. Millennials are logging into their MySpace and FaceBook accounts 3 – 4 times each day, sending instant messages to friends, and uploading their videos to YouTube. Are you there?

  1. Listen to the conversation. Where many businesses are failing today is that they are not listening to the conversations that the Millennials are having about their products or their company. Sign up for Google Alerts, visit Technorati and see what individuals are blogging about.
  2. Create accounts in FaceBook and MySpace and other Social Media. Put you name out there. Make sure that you company has a space among social media outlets. One thing to keep in mind though is to not be overly commercial. Millennials can see right through it. Rather, be genuine and let your prospective market understand what you’re really about and what you stand for.
  3. Communicate on a personal level. Create a two way dialogue with your audience. Give them an opportunity to speak to you. Whether you let them rate your products, share comments, or share their experience with friends, providing a forum to socialize is essential.
  4. Focus on consistent messaging. Regardless of which media type you use (email marketing, direct mail, Adwords, etc.), keep your messaging consistent. If you say one think and do another, or change your messaging frequently, you will not be building the trust necessary to ensure lifetime customer value.
  5. Be creative. When your marketing is creative, it can very quickly gain momentum. With the advent of YouTube, Flickr, and Delicious, messages are quickly shared and distributed. Don’t force the issue. Rather, create something meaningful, fun, and worth sharing. Before you know it, the Millennials will be sharing and distributing information about your and your brand.

Improving the effectiveness of your marketing to Millennials is no small undertaking. To be truly successful, you need to understand the social dependence these individuals have when communicating and the value they place on the opinion of others. Although much of Millennial marketing needs to happen online, don’t lose track of some tradition media like direct mail. As much as marketing has changed, traditional media can still be effective – just make sure it has a social component.

Well I guess I am busted in a way, lol. The other day someone was reading our BLOG article about our clients being mostly baby boomers and decided to do some research on who we really are. According to them their research led to a Dallas Morning News article about our business as a success story. That then led them to our original business site the one80group. Not to be happy with their results they decided to search for us on some sites like linked-In and FaceBook. After a while the individual came across my profile on face book that I setup some time ago.  After browsing around my profile for a while they came to a question that they were very curious about.

Why are almost all of your friends and clients women?

To the average person it my look real simple. Here I am a "Married" nice guy with all these wonderful and beautiful women as friends. Conclusion, "hey he likes women," just like all the other men on the planet that fall for hooters and well pretty much anything aimed at men that includes women. Well, hate to disappoint our little researcher, but my friends are mostly women on FaceBook because I  love working with open successful women. I am a type of entrepreneur that loves to be collaborative and supportive of each others dreams. I have found from my experience that women on the Internet work better together and believe in a common good. Most of the successful guys I know only want themselves to make more money, not everyone in the group. One of our clients the other day made a joke at the National Association of Women Business Owners event we were speaking at "here’s Mark surrounded by all these women again." I was like yep… I wouldn’t have it any other way. I would rather change the world than change my golf clubs. Here is my top reasons for having mostly women as my friends and clients.

  1. Care about me as a person
  2. Want to make a difference
  3. Ask about my son
  4. Have a sense of humor
  5. If they disagree you can still be friends
  6. Are good at relating to people
  7. Dress as nice as I do, shirt and tie at work even when business casual. No Jacket though
  8. Collaborative
  9. Believe everyone can be successful
  10. Appreciate my knowledge
  11. Know what they like and don’t like
  12. Will buy you a massage
  13. Send nice cards to you
  14. Checks come in pretty envelopes
  15. Ask questions
  16. Will tell you if you smell good
  17. Like nice cars with style like me. I drive a JAG.
  18. They are pretty
  19. They smell nice
  20. Don’t ask how much I bench
  21. Talk about their dreams
  22. Talk about mistakes and success in life
  23. Write nice emails
  24. Appreciate beauty
  25. Like dessert, even if they shouldn’t :)

Now remember that our clients are not 20 something. So, no need to send me an email saying "I know lots of women and they aren’t anything like this." With age and experience comes wisdom.

FACEBOOK Chat

April 30, 2008

If you have been using FaceBook then you know how it requires loading various plug-ins to be able to chat with your FaceBook friends. Now, FaceBook has a built-in chat feature that shows which friends are online and allows you to instantly chat with them.

What does this mean to you? If you are prospecting or trying to invite people to join your FaceBook, there’s no more waiting… you can ping them right there and open the door to collaboration. Connecting has never been easier!

And, for those of you who think… MySpace… FaceBook… what next? Remember that FaceBook.com is the choice of Boomer and Gen-X professionals. That means, yes, it is worth your time to figure this community out!

I won’t pretend to know more about FaceBook.com than I do, but I will share with you that I am in awe of what Mark has done with it. In just two weeks, he has added a bunch of wonderful “friends” such as Sir Richard Branson (yes, that one), John Assaraf, Mark Victor Hanson, Jim Cramer (star of Mad Money), and Pat O’Bryan (author of Your Portable Empire).

At first, he would walk into my office and announce, “I have five more new friends.” And then, “So and so just accepted me as a friend.” Then he said, “There’s a limit of 5,000 friends so Mark Cuban is letting people know how he’s going to decide who those 5,000 will be.” But what got my attention was when he walked in and said, “Sir Richard Branson just accepted me as a friend.” That’s when I finally said, “How do you do all of this?”

Part of the power of FaceBook.com is a plug-in called More Friends. The plug-in is available right on the site. You just load it and all of a sudden you get suggestions of friends that are friends of your current friends you might want to invite to join your FaceBook. It’s like an accelerated ripple effect.

How to Build Free Backlinks for your Site (backlinks are links from other sites that can help increase your site’s popularity).

Although paid methods can help you get backlinks a lot faster, using these free methods can save you a lot of money.

  • Directory Submission. There are literally thousands of free web directories out there. This is one good way to build backlinks, although directory submission takes weeks to months to years to get approved because these are manually approved. Please make sure the directories have a Google PageRank value.
  • Article Submission. To do this, first you need to have an article ready. Your article must be unique, well thought of, and related to the site link you want to place on Articles Directories. Articles on Article Directories are then copied to other sites along with your link, that means it helps in getting more backlinks for your site.
  • Comment Posting. Akismet was created to prevent people from spamming blogs. To prevent your site from being banned, make your comments relevant and sensible and don’t place a link on your comment, but only on the URL field. Make sure these comments doesn’t have a nofollow on the link rel attribute.
  • Write Quality Content. Quality content means original and interesting content that people will talk about and possibly post links from their site, talking about the post you made on your site. It is best that your content is current and the topics are widely talked about, even controversial topics are good link bait.
  • Social Bookmaking. Got a good content that nobody knows? Share it with everybody. Social Bookmaking sites help increase your site visits and backlinks when people bookmark your site on their favorites list. Just make sure you don’t abuse by bookmaking all the pages of your site or you will be banned by them.
  • Give something away for Free. Do you know how to create web templates? Build as many as you can and people will start using them, and along with it are your links. The number of backlinks generated are endless. But if you cant, you can still give away something for like free quote-of-the-day, etc. something like that.
  • Contribute to Wikipedia. Are you an expert of something or have some good information you want to share? Post it in Wikipedia (sign in required) and along with it is a link to your site as the resource page of the information posted on the wiki. Make sure you don’t post all the time of they’ll ban you.
  • Social Networking. MySpace, Friendster, FaceBook, and even YouTube can be called a Social Networking site. These sites are good sources of traffic, especially if you a lot of friends in the list or you have a funny and interesting content you have posted on your account page. Get connected and you can get links.
  • Government and Education Sites. Government and Education sites are quality backlinks, meaning Search Engines value sites more if they are linked from these kind of sites. It’s very hard to get these kind of links but you can start by participating in their forums.
  • Forum Posting. I admit. I have been doing these to spam sites, but not anymore ;) . The right forum posting technique is to participate on sites that you are really interested in. This way you can enjoy posting on forums and you will be surprised you already have thousands of posts on forums with your links on your signature.
  • Join Groups. Being an active member of several organizations can help you get backlinks as well. Most established organizations have good traffic and PR and if your site is linked there, your site can have a good backlink from this site as well as other members can link your site from their sites too.
  • Participate to Yahoo! Answers. Yahoo! Answers is a very popular section from Yahoo! and people visit there to ask questions and participate by posting the best answer. First, look for a question you think you can answer, post the answer on your site and finally post the Answer in Yahoo! Answers along with your link.
  • Post on Craigslist. Most of the traffic this site gets are from the US. If you wish to get good traffic from Craigslist, make your post catchy and not spam. Craigslist is more of a traffic generating site than a source for backlink since a post expires after sometime. Make your links last by posting regularly.
  • Know your Competitors’ Backlinks. Check out your competitors backlinks at BacklinkWatch.com.

Link to relevant sites / categories. If your site is about cars, link to pages related to cars only.
Link to sites with good Page Rank value.
Link to sites with good traffic.
MANY Backlinks are good for your site.
RELEVANT Backlinks are better than regular backlinks.
RELEVANT and HIGH PR Backlinks are better than relevant backlinks.
HIGH TRAFFIC, RELEVANT and HIGH PR Backlinks are the best backlinks every site needs.
